In Name Only (Matthew 7:21)

Many people claim to be Christians do not really belong to Christ. Some call themselves Christians just because they are not part of some other religion. Others say they respect Christ as a teacher and claim to be following His example. Some may have even joined a church and become active members. But unless these people have been born again through faith in Jesus, they are Christian in name only.

Scottish pastor Andrew Bonar was saying goodbye to a missionary acquaintance who was accompanied by his young sister. “Well, my dear, what is your name?” Bonar asked the girl. “Christine,” she replied. “What a lovely name!” he said. “You see, my dear, you have ‘Christ’ in your name. But do you have Christ in your heart?” Bonar’s question set the young lady thinking. That very night, after a long talk with her brother, she trusted Christ as her Savior. Christine no longer had Christ in her name only. He was now dwelling within her.

Perhaps you have profess to be a Christian but have never consciously placed your trust in Christ. You have never experienced the salvation He has provided through His sacrifice on the cross. I urge you, receive Him today. The Bible makes it clear that “he who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God (John 3:18).

Though people call you Christian

Because you act the part,

It’s what God thinks that matters –

Does Christ live in your heart? – H. G. Bosch

Many who have tons of religion don’t have an ounce of salvation.
