More Beyond (Hebrews 9:27)

Our belief about the eternal destiny of our soul must be rooted in Scripture. To base our ideas about life and death on man’s teachings instead of Divine revelation is unsatisfactory. Some philosophers, for example, see this life as the sum total of man’s existence. They say that when we die we cease to be. How wrong they are!

In Valladolid, Spain, where Christopher Columbus died in 1506, stands a monument commemorating the great discover. Perhaps the most interesting feature of the memorial is a statue of a lion destroying one of the Latin words that had been part of Spain’s motto for centuries. Before Columbus made his voyages, the Spaniards thought they had reached the outer limits of earth. Thus their motto was “Ne Plus Ultra,” which means “No More Beyond.” The word being torn away by the lion is “Ne” or “no,” making it read “Plus Ultra.” Columbus had proven that there was indeed “more beyond.”

The words “Plus Ultra” also apply to what lies beyond the grave. Notice what Christ taught in today’s Scripture reading. He was not advancing a theory; He was revealing facts. Likewise, His apostles proclaimed truth when they said that the eternal home of sinners is different from that of saints, and that the choices made in this life determine one’s destiny, which is final and irreversible.

Yes, what we do with Christ and His salvation settles for us whether our “more beyond” will be filled with everlasting joy or endless regret. – Paul R. Van Gorder

Oh, why not turn while yet you may?

Too late it soon will be;

A glorious life you may possess

Throughout eternity. – Anon.

What we weave in time we must wear in eternity.
