All of us have probably made a promise at one time or another that we could not keep. But this is never true of God. He always stands behind His word, and what He says can be depended on. His promises in Christ are “Yes” and “Amen” (2 Corinthians 1:20). Because of their scope and perfection, the apostle Peter calls them “exceedingly great and precious.Here are a few on which we may lean:

  1. Help in time of need.He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’ So we may boldly say: ‘The Lord is my helper’ (Hebrews 13:5, 6).
  2. Strength in our weakness.Fear not, for … I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you (Isaiah 41:10).
  3. Cheer in despondency.Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid (Matthew 14:27).
  4. Guidance in perplexity.For this is God, our God forever and ever; He will be our guide even to death (Psalm 48:14).
  5. Comfort in trouble.As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you(Isaiah 66:13).
  6. Joy in sorrow. The Lord says, “Those who sow in tears shall reap in joy(Psalm 126:5).
  7. Power in service.But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me(Acts 1:8)

Are you God’s child? Then trust His word and claim His “exceeding great and precious promises (2 Peter 1:4). They’re the kind you can lean on!Henry G. Bosch

Standing on the promises that cannot fail,

When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail;

By the living Word of God I shall prevail,

Standing on the promises of God. – Carter

You can never break God’s promises by leaning on them.
