Resting on the Promises (Romans 4:20)

I like the story about old Uncle Oscar and his first airplane ride. Knowing that he had been somewhat apprehensive about it, his friends were eager to hear how it went. At the first opportunity, they asked him if he enjoyed the flight. “Well,” commented Uncle Oscar, “it wasn’t as bad as I thought it might be. But I’ll tell you this, I never did put all my weight down!

This reminds me of how some Christians take the promises of the Bible. They have no trouble believing what it says about the Lord Jesus Christ saving all who place their trust in Him. They know their sins have been forgiven and the heaven is their eternal home. But they fail to take the Lord at His word when it applies to other areas of their lives. They’ve never “put all their weight down. As a result, they are plagued by doubts, fears, and uncertainties. They aren’t “enjoying the trip” to Glory as much as they could be. Some believers find it easy to trust God for spiritual blessings, but they are afraid that He won’t meet their daily needs. They have every confidence in the biblical teaching about eternity, but they do not trust the promises that assure them of God’s love, His care, and His presence in the here and now.

If today we find ourselves burdened with worries, anxieties, and fears, it’s a sure indication that we’re not “putting all our weight down. Let’s not be like Uncle Oscar. Instead, let’s be like Abraham who “did not waver at the promise of God.Richard W. De Haan

Standing on the promises I cannot fall,

Listening every moment to the Spirit’s call,

Resting in my Savior as my all in all,

Standing on the promises of God. – Carter

You can’t break God’s promises by leaning on them.
