Healing for a Broken Heart (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)

A large sign was painted on the side of a fix-it shop in a small town in Georgia that read: “We can mend everything but a broken heart.

That clever bit of advertising raises a vital question: Is there anything that can mend a broken heart? When unrelenting sadness darkens each day, or when grief overwhelms us, where can we find comfort and help? Can the human wisdom and care of friends, family, or business associates provide the healing we need? As helpful as their encouragement and support may be, we soon discover that the inner ache of our should is still there.

There is One, however, who does mend broken hearts. He is referred to as “the Father of mercies and God of all comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3). In the person of His Son, He left heaven’s perfect environment to live in this world of heartbreak. And since He “was in all pointed tempted as we are, yet without sin,” He can “sympathize with our weaknesses (Hebrews 4:15).

If you struggle today beneath a crushing weight of sorrow, “Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you (Psalm 55:22). Pour out your sorrows to the “God of all comfort. In His own time, and according to His own wisdom, He will mend your broken heart.Paul R. Van Gorder

I have been through the valley of weeping,

The valley of sorrow and pain,

But the God of all comfort was with me,

At hand to uphold and sustain. – Anon.

Christ was broken for us to comfort the broken among us.
